Keep mixing up mauī and māku
Just did the unit on body parts and directions. Keep getting mauī (left) confused with māku (for me). Anyone else have words that sound similar tripping them up? My brain wants to think they're related somehow.

Oh, I totally get that Hemi. The "māku" one always makes me think of "kia whā ngā tōtiti māku" from that earlier unit, like "four sausages for me".
wait yeah i noticed that too! and there's "ringaringa mauī" for left hand, so you're literally getting the direction mixed up with the possession thing. i keep wanting to say "māku hand" which makes no sense lol. do you think there's actually any connection or is it just coincidence?
It's so easy to get mixed up, isn't it? I remember the lesson that said "Kia ono ngā heki māku" for "Six eggs for me" and I always have to stop and think about the māku part. I wonder if there's a trick to remembering them separately.
maybe try thinking of māku as 'my stuff' since it's always with food or things? like all those examples are about getting things for yourself. and mauī is just the direction, never about owning anything. that's how i'm trying to keep them separate anyway.
